Q&A with a Barefoot | Janet Beenen

Over the next month we are asking various women who are living life of their own terms a series of short questions. The purpose? To highlight that 'success' has a different definition for each and everyone of us, to highlight both our failures and our achievements and to start thinking about how we can each have a positive impact for the future generation....

Janet is 28 and originally from the Netherlands. Two years ago she decided to move to Sweden with her previous partner in order for him to receive treatment on his prosthetic leg and since then has developed a passion for natural movement spending much of her time in Sweden living barefoot. Here's her AW Q&A:

What’s your biggest achievement?

Discovering that I am able to learn from every person I meet.

What’s your biggest failure?

I don't like to look at decisions that I made as a failure or as a success. The choice I made or am making is going to have a ripple effect in life. You never know how things work out. I feel it is important to see every moment and decision as a step forward to learn and grow.

What does success mean to you in 3 words?

Loving myself unconditionally.

What do you love about yourself most?

That I get intense happiness when I am alone doing something I love.

Whats’ your biggest insecurity?

Whether I am good/funny/smart/interesting enough for other people.

What advice would you give yourself to a woman half your age? (Janet's 28)

Enjoy all the ups and downs that life gives you. Realise that you can grow from them and that it is your decision how to deal with situations. Look at life with a positive mindset and always be open to reflect on yourself.

What is your biggest concern for the future generation and what would you do to change this?

That the next generation is going to be so disconnected from nature and from each other that we end up living in a ‘me me me’ society. To change this I think we need to encourage children to play more outside and freely in nature - in woods. I've also seen the positive impact that a barefoot lifestyle has had for me and I'd love to share this knowledge with more people.
