Behind Above Water is the underlying mission to create a change in culture not only for ourselves but also for The Future Generation. Increasing pressures of the 21st Century are already having visible impacts on the future generations; a growing crisis regarding mental health, record levels of obesity, continued concerns over gender inequalities and an increasing disconnect with nature. We want to help change this and we need you to help us.
GENDER
For every £1 a man earns, a woman only earns 81p and the gender pay gap is not expected to close until 2069.
Women remain underrepresented in business with only 13.2% of FTSE 250 directorships currently held by women.
MENTAL HEALTH
More women are experiencing mental health issues than ever before. “Young women have become a key high risk group” according to the NHS - 1 in 4 show mental health illness such as depression, eating disorders and self harm
OBESITY
The UK is the second most obese country in Europe with 33% of 10 -11 year olds obese or overweight
By 2030 74% of men and 64% of women are expected to be obese
NATURE
The time we spend in parks, woods and fields has dramatically decreased in recent years
A fifth of children do not play outside on an average day with 3/4 of children in the UK spending less time outdoors than prison inmates
This could all lead to very depressing reading but the good news is that we have the ability to help change this - we want to help create a culture in which our daughters will earn the same pay as our sons, where they will look to themselves for self-assurance not to social media and a culture where they spend time playing outdoors aspiring to be independent, active and inclusive individuals.
We are on the look out for Future Generations Ambassadors - the girls and young women who are embracing their difference, inspiring others and standing out from the crowd. If you would like to be an Ambassador and share your story or if you work with girls and young women and would like us to speak with you, please get in touch.
